A Bushman's Daughter 's image

I'm Judith Russell, a country girl at heart. I was born in Launceston, Tasmania, and grew up in Moltema, a small rural community in the local government area of Meander Valley in the northwest region of Tasmania. I am the third of four children: Maree, Bevan, me, and Lindy. Dad was a sawmiller, a bushman, and a successful businessman. Mum was a teacher, then later a cook, and worked at many venues during her life.

At the age of 16, I moved to Devonport and lived there most of my life, apart from a couple of years on the mainland. I spent a year in Moltema when Dad passed away in 2004, then moved to Launceston in 2005. In July 2023, I returned to Devonport after nearly 20 years away to start a new chapter of my life.

A Tribute to My Father

This book is dedicated to my father, a remarkable man who rose from humble beginnings to become a self-made businessman.

In 1952, he and my mother moved to Moltema to run a sawmill, marking the start of a new chapter in their lives. In the 1960s, he logged from the Great Western Tiers and built a hut for his men—a testament to his hard work and dedication.

The Hills Logging Hut, now recently renovated, stands as a lasting tribute to his memory. It remains a symbol of his legacy and the enduring impact he had on our lives. I am incredibly proud to be his daughter and to honour his memory through this book.
